What is 'the third sector' and what is its role?

The ‘third sector’ is an umbrella term that covers a range of different organisations that are neither public sector (government run) nor private sector (profit-making private enterprises).

You might know the third sector by a range of other names, including the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE), charitable sector and not-for-profit.

These terms all describe organisations which share the same fundamental elements:

  • Non-governmental
  • Non-profit
  • Values-driven.

Third sector organisations include:

  • Charities
  • Voluntary and community organisations
  • Social enterprises and cooperatives

Third sector organisations operate at all levels of society, from the very local to the national and the international, and they make a significant contribution to the health and well-being of society both in the UK and abroad.

In Leeds we estimate that there are around 3,500 third sector groups and organisations – ranging from citywide organisations with multi-million pound turnover, to small volunteer led groups in the community.

The diversity of the sector is what makes it so unique and we aim to provide the best advice and guidance for groups and organisations – enabling them to continue Doing Good in Leeds.
