My name is Flick and I am currently undertaking a student placement at Voluntary Action Leeds as part of my 'year in industry'. I am working on the Business Doing Good in Leeds programme.
My name is Flick and I am a Sociology and Social Policy student at the University of Leeds, currently taking part in a placement year in industry which started in September 2015. I am passionate about social welfare, social responsibility and social change.
Having volunteered since I was a teenager and witnessing first hand the excellent services charities can provide as well as experiencing the rewards of volunteering myself, I knew that when I graduated I wanted to work in the third sector. Working for Voluntary Action Leeds is providing me with a great knowledge of all the charitable organisations in Leeds and opening my eyes to the plethora of volunteering opportunities in Leeds.
I am currently working on the Business Doing Good in Leeds programme. My role is to work in partnership with businesses and the public sector to promote volunteering, and to set up both individual and team volunteering opportunities for staff. So far I have attended two team days. The first team day I saw in action was a MAE care tea dance, with volunteers from the council. It was obvious that everyone enjoyed the event and the volunteers were enthused by the fulfilling way of spending their afternoon.
Stank Hall Barn had help from five Asda volunteers with their community garden, yet another positive afternoon. It was great to see how people could clearly recognise the benefits of volunteering and taking time out of the office to engage with projects that they may not normally be aware of.
I am really enjoying my time here, and would like to thank everyone at VAL for being so friendly and welcoming!
