We were asked by NHS Leeds West CCG to attend a recent event held by NHS England in our capacity as patient leaders. The day centred on the specific communication needs of patients who require British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation or those whose main language is not English. We came with an open mind to help the NHS as it looks to develop quality standards for interpretation and translation services.
Recently I joined the Patient Leader programme that has been developed by NHS Leeds West CCG expertly guided by the CCG’s Engagement Lead, Chris Bridle. Put simply a Patient Leader’s job is to champion the voice of the wider community.
My name is Katie and I am currently undertaking a part-time secondment over the summer at Voluntary Action Leeds. I am working 2.5 days here and 2 days a week at my other role at the University of Leeds.
