What is JumpStart?

JumpStart is a ten-week course which is aimed at mature learners who are thinking about applying to university. It provides participants with information about and experience of studying at university, primarily through taster sessions in different subject areas including Business Studies, Literature, Science, Criminology and Education. Participants are given an idea of what kinds of skills are needed for university study and the opportunity to develop these skills, as well as support from our Guidance Officer to help them decide what the next steps in their educational progression should be.

When does it run?

The course runs on Wednesday evenings from 5.00-7.00pm, with one Saturday session from 10.00am-3.00pm. There are two courses per academic year, the first usually running from the end of September or the beginning of October and the second running from the middle or end of January. Is it for me? If you already have some experience of Higher Education (whether or not this is equivalent to UK university study) this course will not be suitable for you. Other than this, applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis. However, we would usually expect students to have achieved GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above or be working towards these. We also greatly value life skills and experience and expect students to show their commitment to the course as places are limited.
