Yorkshire MESMAC has been awarded a grant through the Transform Leeds Community Anchors Pilot Scheme to improve engagement between infrastructure organisations and LGB&T communities.Yorkshire MESMAC is one of the oldest and largest sexual health organisations in the country. Our historical focus is HIV prevention and sexual health promotion with gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men. Additionally our Community Development approach means that we are concerned with the wider lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGB&T) health, social and equity agendas. We work with LGB&T communities to tackle underlying causes of physical and mental illness and to challenge those structures and systems that seek to exclude us from decision making.
We have produced a first draft of the ‘How to Guide/Terms of Engagement’ document outlining how mainstream organisations can work to engage with LGB&T communities and groups and vice versa. This is currently being sent out for comments to various LGB&T stakeholder groups across the city and Yorkshire MESMAC LGB&T volunteers. Here’s a link to the Community Anchors dropbox folder that has a first draft of the guide - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2a8f0h5lpk0gkrx/Z0Zu5o1Bh0 - any feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
We are also developing an online hub of LGB&T groups and providers where people can get advice, discuss ideas and share good practice, referral pathways and policy documents. The Community Anchors Project Facebook page, dropbox and Linkedin are being used to facilitate this.
If you would like to get involved or you have any relevant documents you would like to share on the hub, please get in touch with Lila at firstname.lastname@example.org or 01132 444209.
