On Wednesday 21 January, Business Doing Good in Leeds, VAL’s Employer Supported Volunteering (ESV) program, attended an ESV event jointly organised by Business in the Community and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which took place in DWP’s offices in Quarry House.

ESV volunteering is when employers support their employees to volunteer during worktime. Sonja Woodcock and newly recruited Brendan Tannam had a presence at the event sharing information about Business Doing Good in Leeds, all the work and support on offer through VAL’s various programmes and volunteering opportunities through the Volunteer Centre. The team’s invite to the event came about after Sonja and Brendan met up with Jackie Hogarth from DWP the week before.

Jackie runs DWP’s hugely successful Employer Supported Volunteering Scheme, Community 10,000, and has been really supportive in passing on her insight on what it takes to get an ESV programme off the ground, market it and then make it work. Over 30,000 volunteering days have been completed by DWP staff since its launch in 2011! Jackie was then kind enough to invite the team to have a stand at the event.

Nick Clarke, from Business in the Community, had organised the event, which was well attended by both employees at Quarry House and third sector organisations. It was a great opportunity for Sonja and Brendan to network and discuss potential ESV volunteering opportunities with local organisations including Meanwood Valley Urban Farm, the Royal National Institute of Blind People and Zest Health for Life. The team would like to extend their thanks to all of the staff at DWP and Business in the Community for making it such a worthwhile day.

Business Doing Good in Leeds is looking for more ESV volunteering opportunities in the community. If your organisation would benefit from ESV support through either a team of volunteers or a more specific skill-share, please get in touch with Sonja and Brendan on  esv@val.org.uk.
