The Leeds City Ambassadors are going from strength to strength! Since their formation in 2012 they have assisted with a number of major events in Leeds – welcoming visitors to the city in 2012 for the Olympic Torch celebrations and events, in 2013 for the opening of Leeds Arena and BBC Sports Personality of the Year and in 2014 for Le Grand Depart of the Tour de France and Magical Leeds. They now have over 600 volunteers prepared to help at Leeds City Ambassador events.
There are exciting times ahead for Leeds City Ambassadors in the New Year – they’ve been asked to assist with both the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race 1-3 May which ends in Roundhay Park Leeds on 3 May and the Rugby Union World Cup on Sept 26 and 27th. There are lots of other events to look forward to in 2015 too – more of those later.
Le Grand Depart and all that
The main event for Leeds City Ambassadors in 2014 of course was Le Grand Depart of course in July where the Ambassadors assisted in the build up week and the event itself in Leeds. Crowds at the roadside for Le Tour were estimated at 3.5 million, generating over £100m to the local economy.
Then before Christmas the Ambassadors took on an 11 day programme assisting the Magical Leeds and Christmas Lights celebrations in Leeds City Centre which again was a huge success, welcoming visitors to the city and helping Leeds to record an increase in visitors to the city centre with 4.5 million people using the city centre shops. The City Ambassadors worked really well to make these events run smoothly and feedback from the public was excellent. And it was FUN!
In 2014 Leeds City Ambassadors also launched the Leeds Welcome Training Programme, a customer service course for both volunteer Leeds City Ambassadors and Local Business Ambassadors. Feedback has been excellent! The Ambassadors have done other things too such as helping out with the Leeds City Council Light Night – the most successful yet! They also raised £140 toward the Lord Mayor’s Appeal for the Children’s Hospital.
