Update from Memories Reminiscence Activity Library

In July 2014, Care & Repair Leeds received funding to expand their Memories Reminiscence Activity Library citywide. A year on, the service is going from strength to strength…

With a wide range of reminiscence resources to suit various ages and stages of dementia, this library at home service allows families living with dementia free access to a whole host of items. Resources include discussion cards, scrapbooks, nostalgic games and activities; all designed to aid reminiscence and communication. Items are delivered and collected from the home for convenience and information and advice on other support services can be provided. The library also has group packs available for local community groups to borrow to run reminiscence sessions with their members.

It is so easy to use; anyone can pick it up and create a fun and enjoyable session.

He has a big smile on his face and is playing dominoes with his granddaughter. Thank you!

In the last year, the library has benefited more than 150 people through individual loaning from the library and the group packs have reached more than 1,000. Thanks to recent grants from local councillors, new resources have just been added to the library so now is a great time to borrow items for yourself.

Karen Bentley, Outreach Worker says: “It’s been a real privilege for me to work with members of the local community using our reminiscence items. A DIY manual from the 1970s and some original 78 records have been recently donated and proved very popular. If you have any original memorabilia from the 1940s-1970s that you would like to see used in the community, please get in touch. Users of the library have particularly requested items on fashion, classic cars, trams, woodwork and dance halls.“
