This three session programme aims to help the parents or carers of teenagers develop their relationships with their children.

Riding the Storm – skills for parents of teenagers Leeds West Academy, Intake Lane, Leeds LS13 1DQ 11th, 18th and 25th May 2016, 5 – 8pm This three session programme aims to help the parents or carers of teenagers develop their relationships with their children.  Some parents/carers may have low self-esteem or lack confidence, and may not recognise the valuable skills that they already possess as parents/carers.  The course is designed to allow parents/carers to build on those skills and to learn to adapt behaviours to different circumstances.   The programme has the overall objectives of:
  • Understand the pressures of being a teenager
  • Breaking bad habits
  • Identify an individual’s skills as a parent/carer of teenagers
  • Managing conflict
  • Negotiating boundaries
  • Support networks
  • Re-building relationships Participants will work through a planned programme of activities, reflective exercises, discussions, group work etc., and will be encouraged to share their experiences and learn from each other as well as the facilitator. The course is structured over 3 x 3 hour sessions and delivered by a qualified and experienced Relate trainer.   The sessions are offered once a week for 3 consecutive weeks, and delivery to a group of between 10 – 15 participants works well. Both parents/carers of a young person are welcome to attend the same course. Parents and carers should attend all three sessions to gain maximum benefit. Comments from previous participants.“The course has made me think about my relationship with my son, and how I can change that.  I can recognise the repetitive cycles that I am in and now know how to change them” “The course has helped me think about how my response impacts on my teenagers” “I found this course fun, very useful and interesting, learnt a lot that I didn’t know much about. Also very helpful and gave ideas to use in the future” “A great course, very reassuring, and good content and handouts to help afterwards” “Very reassuring to hear other’s experiences.  More parents should attend this, will recommend. Given me more confidence in what I am doing” “I believe many parents will benefit from these sessions even just to confirm that we are doing a good enough job to be effective parents”
  • They plan to run the same course in June at Ralph Thoresby High School and this will also be open to parents/carers throughout Leeds.
