Do you want to make a real difference to the lives of older people? You can do exactly that in just one or two hours a week! Bramley Elderly Action and OWLS (Older, Wiser, Local Seniors) are currently looking for Bus Buddies and Befrienders.

Both play a crucial role in improving the lives of local older people, by reducing loneliness and helping people remain healthy and independent. Many older people need transport to get to our activities. We provide minibus transport for those who need it in order to take part. Our team of volunteer Bus Buddies play a vital role in helping our members get on and off the bus, while chatting with them and making them feel welcomed. You may also collect fares, and tell passengers about new activities or other important information. Without a Bus Buddy many of our members would not be able to leave their home, but you can help them take part in something they really enjoy, where they will meet people and maintain their confidence.

To be a Bus Buddy you need to be friendly, reliable and able to push someone in a wheelchair. Befrienders visit a local older person regularly (usually once a week) in their own home. You will spend the time chatting, perhaps looking at photos and perhaps playing a game. In doing so you may build up a strong and rewarding relationship with the person you befriend. This is an incredibly valuable time for people who may not leave their home at all, and may otherwise have little or no social contact. It’s a particularly good volunteer role if you are patient, a good listener, and you like talking one-to-one with someone and appreciate the knowledge and memories of older people. Both of these roles take just a short time each week, but will make a real difference to the lives of the people you support.

Please contact BEA Volunteer Co-ordinators Maureen Rushworth at BEA (Maureen.rushworth@bramleyea.org.uk – 0113 236 1644) or Adrienne Grant at OWLS (adrienne.owls@gmail.com - 0113 369 7077) if you are interested in being a Bus Buddy or a Befriender, or would like to talk about volunteering in any other role.
