Basis Yorkshire is a local Leeds based charity which provides safety, information and support for sex workers in Leeds.Basis believes that sex workers should have the same rights as any other worker and delivers their support completely free from judgement. As well as offering practical support Basis campaigns to end the discrimination and stigmatisation sex workers face every day. December is their main month for campaigning and this year the campaign is focused on ending violence against sex workers. Since 2013 Basis has taken 277 incident reports from women, 121 of which have included significant violence including rape, physical assault, sexual assault, kidnapping, stabbing and drugging. Of these 121 reports only 61 women have felt they can make a full disclosure report to the police. Stereotypes and stigma perpetuate violence so Basis is fighting to challenge those views and raise awareness of the risk of violence to sex workers in Leeds. As well as this they aim to raise funds to enable improved support for those who are at risk of violence. There are many ways you can show your support for Basis; by attending any of our campaign events throughout December, connecting with Basis on social media or by donating any unwanted clothes to our Drop In service. Thank you for your support!
