Staff at Bramley Baths are walking and running 500km to raise much-needed money to support their community-led organisation while it is closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Due to the outbreak, Bramley Baths was temporarily closed on the 18th March 2020 to protect the health and well being of its staff and customers.
As a small community enterprise, the closure of the premises has left them with a massive challenge in terms of securing the future of the baths. Both the Board of Trustees and all who work within the Baths want to make sure it is sustainable for the future and to keep it at the heart of Bramley life. The Baths have survived two world wars and the threat of closure in 2010, but it is still the hub at the centre of the Bramley community.
Duty Manager, Claire Higgins came up with the fundraising idea that staff would walk or run 100km in teams over 14 days and that they would ask the community, family and friends to make donations towards the challenge.
A GoFundMe page was set up and the two teams of 8 members each was drawn at random.
The challenge started on Saturday 2nd May 2020 and by the end of day 1 the 16 team members had already covered a distance of 92km. 100km was just too easy and therefore the target was increased to 500km.
The fundraising target was £1,000 and the funds raised was to go towards the upkeep of the baths during the period of closure. By the 4th May 2020 they had reached their £1,000 target. Claire said that they were blown away by the support received.
By day 9 of the 14 day challenge, the teams had reached the 500km target set. However, the motivation is still as strong as when the teams started as the title for the most distance covered in 14 days is still up for grabs.
The sole aim of this challenge was to raise funds but actually, during these unprecedented times it has kept the team members fully engaged with each other and spirits have remained high whilst employees are currently furloughed.
If you would like to follow the journey, regular updates are posted on the GoFundMe page and of course, you could also make a donation via the same link, should you wish to do so.
