Making the voices of minority communities be heard by decision makers in Leeds

Who we are and what we do

The Culturally Diverse Hub works to ensure the voice of culturally diverse communities are heard by decision makers in Leeds. Membership is open to anyone from a culturally diverse community or with an interest in the issues in Leeds – both individuals and organisations.

The work of the Hub is shaped by people from culturally diverse communities.

A number of people known as ‘Hub Reps’ help to decide priorities for action and set out the work the Hub will undertake. The Hub Reps meet regularly to discuss progress and what should happen next.

The Leeds Culturally Diverse Hub is a partnership between Leeds City Council and all local culturally diverse communities, and is supported by Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL).

The Hub is committed to the issues raised through the Black Lives Matter Movement and works to challenge racism at all levels.

How we work

Every year the Hub organises up to four events that focus on a particular theme, like health or employment, which are open to everyone. The Hub invites guest speakers to talk about key issues, including how services in the city are delivered and how they are targeted at culturally diverse communities. Group discussions then focus on issues and improvements, with Hub Reps taking any recommendations forward.

The Culturally Diverse Hub also supports Leeds City Council and other public sector organisations find out what culturally diverse communities think before decisions are made for the city.

The Hub has three ‘sub groups’ which meet regularly to discuss relevant issues how they impact on culturally diverse communities:

  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Arts and Culture
  • Education Training and Employment

Every year the Hub’s Arts and Culture sub group promote and celebrate Black History Month by organising events during the month (and at other times) to promote the contribution that Black African Caribbean communities make in Leeds and further afield.
