A new evaluation by Voluntary Action Leeds highlights the impact of the Afrikindness Neurodiversity Community Programme (ANCP), which has supported hundreds of culturally diverse families in Leeds navigating neurodivergence.

Developed in response to widespread barriers faced by Black and minority ethnic families – such as stigma, limited awareness, and lack of access to timely and culturally appropriate support – the ANCP provided training, workshops, and one-to-one guidance. Over 400 people attended sessions, more than 600 accessed resources, and 141 community leaders were trained, with further sessions planned.

The evaluation found families felt more informed, less isolated, and better able to support their children. Afrikindness’ approach—offering both practical education and emotional support—was praised as transformative:

“If I hadn’t known Afrikindness, I’d probably be struggling with sleep, nutrition, mental health… I’d be in depression,” shared one parent.

The charity is also helping shape local systems through its role on the Leeds Learning Disability and Neurodivergence Population Health Board, and as a member of Young Lives Leeds, advocating for culturally appropriate support citywide.
