Added: 01/03/2024

As part of the Welcome Spaces initiative across Leeds, Age UK Leeds have introduced ‘Social over Soup’ (SOS), a transformative initiative for individuals over 50. Launched in October 2023.  Age UK Leeds Community Hub offers a welcoming space enriched with warm soup, sweet treats, and opportunities for social engagement. This serves as a lifeline for older individuals, providing them a haven for social activities and well-being enhancement.

Zoe’s story: A tale of resilience and renewal

Among the many lives touched by ‘Social over Soup,’ Zoe’s story stands out as a testament to the transformative power of community. At 54 years old, Zoe found herself living alone, coping with the loss of several family members, and suffering with cancer.

Isolating herself for 4 ½ years, Zoe’s mental and physical well-being suffered. Her journey to ‘Social over Soup’ began when her GP referred her to Age UK Leeds. Initially apprehensive, Zoe took the courageous step to visit the hub, and found solace in the warmth of the community, making new friends, and actively participating in various activities. After years of isolation, Zoe discovered a newfound sense of purpose and joy.

This initiative goes beyond providing warm meals; it represents a lifeline for individuals like Zoe, offering a renewed sense of belonging and purpose. The partnership between Age UK Leeds and Welcome Spaces showcases the powerful impact of community collaboration, creating spaces where individuals not only enjoy good food but also find companionship, support, and a new lease on life.
