Building Trust, Keeping People Safe: Strengthening Safeguarding in Faith Communities

Voluntary Action Leeds
Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL), in partnership with Leeds Safeguarding Children Partnership, has published a new findings report highlighting learning from a year-long project working with faith-based organisations on safeguarding.
The Safeguarding in Faith Communities project involved co-producing culturally and faith-specific safeguarding training with local faith organisations including Leeds Grand Mosque, Strings of Life Chinese Church, Guru Nanak Sikh Temple in Armley, and Afrikindness. These tailored versions of VAL’s popular Safeguarding BASICS sessions integrated scripture, cultural context, and lived experience to build understanding and confidence around safeguarding.
Crucially, the report recognises the time and relationship-building needed to engage smaller, volunteer-led faith organisations. The work also shows the value of trusted intermediaries in reaching communities where safeguarding language and statutory processes can be misunderstood or distrusted.
You can read the full report here and explore how co-production, cultural awareness and community trust are key to keeping all our communities safe.
