A message from Dawn at Armley Helping Hands

Due to the overwhelming request for places on our Dementia and Age Friendly Leeds Training in June 2026, Elizabeth and Sarah have agreed to deliver an additional session on Monday 13 July 2026.

The session will run as follows:

9.00am Refreshments

9.30am – 10.30am Dementia Friends session (1 hour)

A Dementia Friend is somebody that learns about dementia so they can help their community, workplace or family be more dementia friendly.

Too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with. Dementia Friends helps by raising awareness and understanding, so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want.

The session is split into three parts:

  • Five key messages that we think everyone should know about dementia
  • Understanding how dementia could affect a person
  • Dementia Friendly actions that can support people living with dementia

10.30am onwards Wise Up to Ageism session (2 hours)

The aim of Wise Up to Ageism is to raise awareness and encourage people to discuss and reflect on ageism in our everyday lives. We also aim to help people challenge ageist attitudes.

The session explores five key areas:

  • Let’s talk about ageism – What is ageism and how widespread is it?
  • Ageism affects people of all ages – Whether we are younger, middle aged or older – ageism affects us all
  • Older, different, equal – older people are diverse and ageing and ageism affect us differently
  • What does it do to us? –  The impact of age discrimination on our health, self-worth, life expectancy, work and access to services
  • Time to feel good about ageing – Ageing brings many benefits, share the positives and celebrate the contributions made by older people.

1.00pm Lunch (Pay as you Feel)
