Background: West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health & Care Partnership is made up of organisations working closely together to plan health and care across the region focusing on the health and care needs of local people with key priorities / ambitions. WY&H –  Improving Population Health Programme aims to; improve the physical and mental health outcomes of people living in WY and Harrogate. The West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit brings together specialists from health, law enforcement, local government, education, voluntary and community services and others to understand and tackle the root causes of violent crime.

West Yorkshire act together to help cut violence with early intervention, prevention, education and partnership working. A number of people already have some of the tools they need to tackle violence and its root causes – but many need additional support to help put their time, expertise or skills to best use. The job of the Violence Reduction Unit is to help unlock that potential – by sharing information about what works in spotting the early signs of what might lead to criminal behaviour, and focusing attention and resources on what makes a difference.

WY&H – Improving Population Health Programme and WY Violence Reduction Unit are working to:
– Prevent violence and to reduce its harmful impact
– Reduce and address inequalities in relation serious violence and exploitation
– Strengthen our partnerships, working with our communities, developing our understanding of the root causes of violence.

Why we need this intervention
There has been an ongoing National response to reducing violence and exploitation involving women and girls. In 2010 the government published a Call to End Violence against Women and Girls and in 2016 launched the Violence against Women and Girls Strategy 2016 – 2020.

The Strategy stated that…’ it is unacceptable that many women still suffer in silence from crimes that wreck their lives and the lives of their families – crimes which all too often remain hidden.’
‘The human cost of Violence against Women and Girls is high. Experiences of abuse have serious psychological, emotional and physical consequences and may contribute to multiple disadvantages, or a chaotic lifestyle involving substance misuse, homelessness, offending behaviour, gang involvement, prostitution or mental health problems.’ The Covid-19 Pandemic and measures has again raised the profile of serious violence and exploitation of women and girls with local, national and international reported increases in domestic violence.

West Yorkshire and Harrogate Improving Population Health Programme has collaborated with West Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit to understand and respond to the causes of the causes for women and girls involved in serious violence and exploitation. A long-term public health approach, which tackles the deep rooted and engrained social, health and economic problems facing women and girls, is our best chance to address this issue. Through this intervention, we aim to improve the health and well-being of women and girls, including health life expectancy and understand the risk factors of young women before they reach the criminal justice system.

The intervention aims to: Engage and co-produce with women and girls (including those with lived experience in or out of the criminal justice system) to:

Understand the root causes that influence women and girls involvement in different types of serious violent crime and exploitation.
Identify protective factors to support women and girls and build resilience
Reduce health Inequalities for women and girls.

Outcomes:
The intervention will provide insight and recommendations that can be implemented across West Yorkshire & Harrogate to improve outcomes for women and girls.
