Interview with Rifhat Malik, Director of Give a Gift Charity
Give a Gift Charity has emerged as a beacon of hope for the diverse communities of East Leeds, providing cultural food support since the onset of the pandemic. Rifhat Malik, the organisation’s Director, highlighted the heartening impact of their Welcome Space, established in November 2023.
Operating three times a week, the space offers a welcoming environment where locals, particularly refugees, asylum seekers, individuals on benefits, and those facing destitution, connect with support workers, discuss concerns, and receive advice.
Beyond providing warm meals and a safe haven, Give a Gift Charity extends its support by signposting and facilitating access to various services. Notably, the organisation uncovered unmet needs in the community, assisting an elderly asylum seeker who had received no support for two decades.
The Welcome Space has not only been a vital support system for the community but has also become a catalyst for community development. It provides opportunities for volunteering and hosts sessions like free exercise and swimming for ladies and a gym partnership for men.
Rifhat Malik expressed gratitude for the Welcome Space initiative, emphasising the collaborative efforts within the LCAN (Leeds Community Anchor Network). The dedication of organisations like Give a Gift Charity reflects the resilience and compassion within East Leeds communities, showcasing the positive impact of community-driven initiatives.
