Otley Action for Older People: Fostering community spirit in Otley
Added: 19/04/2024
In a recent interview with Sue Trainor, Project Manager for Otley Action for Older People, we delved into the impact of the Welcome Spaces scheme in the Otley community. Established in November 2023, this initiative has provided a wide range of community support.
As a member of the Leeds Community Action Network (LCAN), Otley Action for Older People has played a pivotal role in bringing Welcome Spaces to fruition throughout the town. Collaborating closely with churches and various community groups, they’ve facilitated the setup and management of these spaces, ensuring accessibility to essential resources and services.
Beyond providing physical spaces, Otley Action for Older People oversees the distribution of funds to support other Welcome Spaces, ensuring a wider reach within the community.
Otley Action operates the sessions three times a week and offer a range of activities. From sports activities for older individuals to digital support and complimentary lunches, drinks and biscuits, there’s something for everyone.
Primarily catering to older individuals with an average attendance of 14 to 15 people,
the space provides a vital resource for connecting with others and accessing support and information.
The initiative has facilitated access to essential services, advocated for individuals facing mobility issues, and helped navigate housing benefits and utility bill challenges. Furthermore, the collaborative spirit fostered by Welcome Spaces has led to the development of new initiatives within the community. As part of Leeds Neighbourhood Networks, individuals can access a range of services from exercise classes and lunch clubs to general advice and digital support.
In Sue’s words, “the true essence of Welcome Spaces lies in the connections forged and the sense of community fostered among participants. The impact of these spaces goes beyond just the physical space. It embodies the spirit of community coming together.”
