Voluntary Action Leeds
VAL is keen to highlight the good news stories coming through from the Leeds Welcome Spaces Scheme. This winter over 180 Third and Faith Sector organisations have opened their doors to the public to offer a safe, warm and welcoming space.
The first of our 2024/25 blog series features Swinnow Community Centre CIC.
Going above and beyond to give people nutritious food
Our Story
When our team first noticed that people were slightly hesitant to attend in-person during warm space hours, we knew we had to find another way to reach those in need. At the same time, we were aware of many families in our community struggling with food insecurity. With the funding we received, we saw an opportunity to make a real difference—by providing hot, nutritious meals to those who needed them most.
We put our plan into action by preparing hot roast dinners every Sunday and cooking additional meals—both fresh and frozen—for collection or local delivery. Our structured referral service ensured that we reached those most in need, and we quickly saw the impact of our efforts.
Families who might have otherwise gone without a proper meal were now receiving nourishing food, delivered straight to their doors. The positive feedback was overwhelming, reaffirming that we were making a real difference in people’s lives.
The warm, welcoming space we created also encouraged more people to visit in person, giving them a chance to see firsthand the support we offer the community. As a result, our volunteer team grew, strengthening our ability to help even more people. The funding didn’t just provide meals—it enabled connection, built trust, and brought our community closer together.
“We are delighted to continue support our community, it’s a joy to be able to provide hope to people, serve practically and love in a practical way”
Craig Newnes, local Director
