Featuring, Dr Sophie King-Hill, Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham, this seminar explores how professionals can strengthen approaches to tackling Violence Against Women, Girls (VAWG) and Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) through inclusive and effective safeguarding practice. It will examine the gendered nature of violence and abuse, recognising that women and girls experience disproportionately high levels of sexual and gender-based violence, while also acknowledging the experiences of boys and other children who may be victims of abuse, exploitation, community violence and harmful sexual behaviour.

A key focus will be on how language and terminology used within safeguarding, policy and practice can influence who is recognised, protected and supported. Drawing on child protection frameworks and children’s rights principles, the session will consider how professionals can ensure that all children at risk are visible within safeguarding systems, while maintaining a clear understanding of the gendered dynamics that underpin much violence and abuse.

The presentation will explore the role of masculinity, patriarchal norms and male violence in shaping patterns of harm, highlighting why these issues remain central to prevention and intervention efforts. It will also examine the practical implications for safeguarding practice, service provision, data collection and multi-agency responses.

The overall aim is to support professionals in developing inclusive, evidence informed approaches to tackling VAWG& VAWC, ensuring safeguarding responses are effective, legally robust and responsive to the needs of all victims while retaining a strong focus on preventing violence against women and all children.
