Baobab Foundation – funding to strengthen communities resisting racial injustice

Added: 08/09/2022

Voluntary Action Leeds

Baobab Foundation was formed in 2020 in response to disproportionate harms experienced in the Black community.

It’s new Collective Fund aims to grow, sustain, and strengthen Black and Global Majority communities resisting racial injustice

Baobab is pro-Black, with 70% of resources going direct to Black African/Caribbean heritage individuals, groups and organisations. We are a people-driven movement which believes that the communities harmed by racism are best placed to create change, and so it aims to resource those with direct, lived experience of the issues they are addressing.

Our fund is not issue-led, giving space for communities working towards racial justice in different ways to share their creativity, passion and gifts. Our fund will work consciously with individuals, groups and organisations whose purpose and practices are focused on collectively addressing racial justice and intersectionality and challenging oppressive systems.

Registered and unregistered organisations with a clear charitable purpose and individuals who are aged 18 or over can apply.

Applicants must: have 75% of leadership identify as Black African/Caribbean and Global Majority people; be self-led and encourage lived experience in their practices; have 75% of leadership with lived experience of the issues they work on; services to Black African/Caribbean and Global Majority communities, intentionally challenging oppressive systems.

Examples of funded activities might be: a series of wellbeing community events; an intergenerational art collaboration; contributions to heating and lighting costs where the work takes place; salaries necessary for thinking through strategy.

Interested groups should note there is a three-stage application process.

Deadline to register interest: 23 September 2022
