Community Payback 50th Year Anniversary

Added: 17/02/2023

HM Prison and Probation Service

We’re marking 50 years of Community Payback throughout 2023.   This is an important and special year for us, and we’d love you to be involved in our celebrations!.

Since the first Community Service order, as it was then known, was made in Nottinghamshire in 1973, many thousands of projects have been completed across England and Wales, helping people on probation to gain skills and experience as they complete their requirements, and benefitting communities.

Projects have included clearing of allotments, the repair and redecoration of community buildings, planting of trees, river and beach clean-ups, the manufacture of toys and recycling of donated wood into furniture.

To commemorate the 50 years, we’ve planned events in our region as part of a series of activities across England and Wales and we’d love you to be involved.

We’ll be celebrating exciting, ongoing projects across West Yorkshire, as well as long-serving staff members and historic projects which have all had a positive impact on our local communities.

Activity will be held each month across all 12 probation regions throughout the year.  Our region has been chosen as the focus for April. We will look to publicise via social media activity across 2023.

If you, or any of our partners, would like to be part of our event in April, or simply wish to come along come out to visit some of our exciting Community Payback projects at any time during 2023 please don’t hesitate to get in touch – details below.

As the focus on Community Payback’s 50th anniversary progresses around England and Wales we’ll be focusing on themes including Luncheon Clubs, developing Warm Spaces; Community Projects including community kitchens and Probation Day.

Our local Community Payback managers are also keen to hear from our local stakeholders including attending local meetings and/or any community nominations.  They can be contacted by email details below or by making a nomination on the government website using this link Nominate a Community Payback project – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
