On 16 September 2021, an online event was held to discuss the way forward for the sector following devolution and appointment of a West Yorkshire Mayor.
The event (hosted by Voluntary Action Leeds and Community Action Bradford and District) sought to begin a conversation in the third sector about how an Assembly might be created.
There were speaker contributions from:
- Peg Alexander (Chair/Facilitator)
- Sam Keighley; Strategic Director Yorkshire Sport (the new opportunities for the third sector
from the point of view of the third sector) - Alison Lowe; Deputy Mayor Policing and Crime (the Mayor’s priorities and where the third
sector fits in) - Sam Keighley, Chris Hollins; Chair of Third Sector Leeds & Kate Hainsworth; Chief Executive
Leeds Community Foundation (panel discussion)
The clear message from the speakers was that the Mayor recognises and welcomes the role the third sector plays in our communities and is keen to ensure that the sector has a role in shaping future policy.
There was a shared view that the time is right to develop these relationships further, with some
attendee’s contributions highlighting the level of engagement and support that has been achieved in more established Mayoral areas like the North East and Greater Manchester.
A report from the event (below) has now been published detailing a summary of conversations and findings.
