Good Neighbours Launch New UK Office

Good Neighbours UK
We’re Good Neighbours UK. As an affiliate of Good Neighbors International, we’re part of a broader global family, committed to empowering people and transforming communities through sustainable development beyond aid. You’ll find us in any community where there is a need, regardless of race, religion, ideology or geographical constraints. Why do we do this, you ask?
Because in a world of plenty, no one should be left behind. We exist to make the world a place without hunger where people live together in harmony. It might be easier said than done but we also believe people have limitless potential and capability for development.
GNUK set camp in York in 2019. Given our commitment to human rights it felt particularly appropriate to base our headquarters in the country’s first Human Rights City. While London was calling, so was the Northern Powerhouse where the people are friendly and kind, the food comes with Yorkshire puddings and the work ethic is a matter of pride for the county. We also felt that our own growth as an organisation would make us a worthwhile employer in the region.
After all, our actions speak for themselves. As an international body, we operate in over 40 countries and implement more than 200 community projects worldwide. Our community development projects (CDPs) focus on child protection and child rights advocacy, water, sanitation and hygiene projects, and community partnerships that strengthen community self-reliance in the long term through social enterprise. We also deliver humanitarian assistance and disaster response programmes, to ensure vital supplies reach people suffering from natural and man-made disasters.
We’re also keen promoters of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Aid alone will not benefit communities in the long term which is why we believe in sustainable development beyond aid as a climate change adaptation strategy. By working closely with communities, we ensure indigenous people have a voice in decision-making processes. We encourage our local partners to form Community Development Committees (CDCs) and work with us to shape project outcomes to best suit their unique community context, needs and resources.
Things were going smoothly until 2020 happened. Our ability to carry our message forward to the UK public became riddled with difficulties as the Covid-19 pandemic gradually brought the world to a standstill. Like most UK businesses, we shut our doors repeatedly, leaving our staff no choice but to carry on the work remotely. Only the dedication, enthusiasm and sheer resilience of our team made it possible for GNUK to register with the Charity Commission, to secure a provisional Small Charities Challenge Fund grant with UK AID Direct and to become the lead adviser for the global Good Neighbors family on safeguarding policy and practice. Our hope is to continue to grow both as an organisation and widen our UK reach to bring country-wide awareness of the SDGs and our commitment to bring good change for the world.
GNUK is now taking on its first community projects designed to address water, sanitation and hygiene needs for girls and impoverished communities in Kyrgyzstan and Cameroon. We are thrilled to announce that we are growing our team and have a number of important roles up for grabs. Check our vacancies page at https://www.goodneighbours-uk.org/about-us/vacancies/ .
