At the heart of Leeds Community Anchor Network’s (LCAN) work is a simple but powerful belief: communities know what they need and have the wisdoms and solutions to achieve change. Year One of the Listening Exercise marks a foundational step in the network’s commitment to community-centered social action. Launched with the belief that the most effective solutions are grounded in the lived experiences and insights of local people, this initiative set out to better understand the priorities, concerns, and hopes of people in the city.

Last year, LCAN engaged with individuals across all wards in Leeds, using a range of inclusive and accessible methods to gather stories, feedback, and ideas. This report shares what we heard—honestly and without filter. It captures recurring themes, unexpected insights, and the deep knowledge that communities hold about the places they call home.

As we reflect on what we’ve learned, this report also outlines how these findings will shape the future of LCAN’s work. Year One was about listening. The years to come will be about deeper listening and acting—together
