Leeds Church Teams up with Supermarket to Tackle Half-Term Food Poverty

Added: 26/10/2020

LoveWorld Leeds

LoveWorld Leeds, a non-denominational Christian church in Cross Green, has partnered with Morrisons supermarket in Hunslet to provide packed lunches for schoolchildren during the half-term break.

The increasing reliance on food-banks and the continuing economic uncertainty caused by COVID-19 spurred LoveWorld members to act, out of compassion for the local community. Pastor Andrew Abraham of LoveWorld met with Morrisons Store Manager Victoria Clayton on Friday to receive the good news that the supermarket will support the effort.

Pledging her support to the scheme, store manager Victoria Clayton said, ‘We are really excited to be teaming up with Love World Leeds to help and support the people of our community in South Leeds. It’s so important that we play our full part in feeding the nation during these uncertain times. Love World is such a brilliant place, and the work they do for the local area is simply amazing. The whole team here at Hunslet Morrisons are so proud that we have the opportunity to help and grow their generosity.’

The first delivery of food arrived at LoveWorld on Saturday, where church members were waiting to parcel the supplies up ready for Monday. LoveWorld also operates a food bank every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 1pm with free tea, coffee, hot and cold food, and friendly conversation on offer. Computers with internet access are also available for visitors to access local services online.

Pastor Andrew said, ‘The founder of our ministry, Reverend Dr Chris Oyakhilome, teaches us that true success in life is found through finding a need and meeting that need. Helping others to find success brings us success. Based on these principles we knew we had to act in the current circumstances. We are truly blessed that Morrisons in Hunslet are giving their generous support to this initiative. We are hugely grateful to them. I would also like to thank our Father, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, and our zonal Pastor, Tony Obi (UKZ1 DSP), for their support in building up LoveWorld Leeds to be in a position to help our local community in this way.’

Parents can collect food parcels at LoveWorld Leeds, 27 Cross Green Lane, LS9 8LJ from 10am-2pm Monday 26th October to Friday 30th October.
