Zero Waste Leeds
The Leeds School Uniform Exchange was set up to make it easy for families to access great quality, second-hand school uniform for free, helping them save money whilst also being kinder to the planet. Parents can use the website to search whether their child’s school already has a uniform exchange or find their nearest exchange run in their community by simply typing in the schools name or post code under the “Find Nearby Exchanges” button.
The website also gives details of where unwanted or outgrown uniform can be donated under the “Donate School Uniform” tab. There are currently over 20 donation points across Leeds and all donations are passed on to uniform exchanges or given out to families at uniform events. Donated uniform should be clean, of good quality (not stained or damaged) and ideally bagged.
Pop up shops are held during school holidays where families can go and get free uniform. Anyone can access the uniform and it is not by referall. The website is regularly updated with upcoming events listed under the “Pop Up Shops” button, as well as giving details of weekly run pop up shops.
In 2023, over 16,700 items of uniform was given out to over 2,900 families in the summer holidays at 98 pop up events, not only saving families money (approximately £284,000 saved) but also being kinder to the environment. Reusing school uniform saved 3,300kg of textile waste ending up in landfill.
