A new qualification in Social Action has recently been launched by Leeds Development Education Centre and Leeds City College. The Level 3 Diploma has been uniquely created with local organisations. The course is for learners who want to strengthen their knowledge, practice and skills in community action, activism, campaigning, climate and social change.
The LS14 Trust supported two local people, Gemma and Ruth, to take part in the pilot that has been running since October 2020. Operations manager Chris Jackson has been delighted with the results so far. “We really value education and we saw this as an opportunity to access high quality training for both a member of staff who lives locally and a passionate volunteer. Learning about social and political systems and the methodology behind different forms of action is invaluable. We are delighted that Gemma and Ruth have gained so much confidence over the last 12 months.”
The course provides access to university study with and also gives learners the chance to apply learning in practical ways so that they can respond collaboratively and positively to challenges in their community and society. Students draw from their own life experiences in studying units that explore different social action methods such as asset based community development and climate action. Students also learn how to manage social action projects effectively.
Gemma and Ruth are interested in making a difference in their community. Gemma started off as a volunteer and is now an employee at the LS14 Trust. “I’ve found passion through learning and now know where I want to be in life. For the first time I’m proud of myself and excited at what my future holds. I no longer feel like – just a Mum”. Ruth is an ex-nurse who is keen to support others in her community and campaign for positive change and her experiences on the course have inspired her to use her skills in her community. “I know now, I have a voice – and I want to use it!”.
