Sporting Heritage

This February the nation’s love of sport, art, and heritage will be celebrated with the launch of the Art of Sporting Heritage campaign, devised by Leeds based social enterprise, Sporting Heritage CIC.

For the first time, the themed month will draw attention to the wide-ranging collections in museums, galleries, sports clubs, homes, schools, and communities that celebrate the strong connection and impact of sport and art.

Hosted across social media, throughout the month there will be free workshops and events, including a launch webinar with artist Gayle Rogers, a draw-along with illustrator Jess Hartshorn, Twitter Takeovers with former Yorkshire Post resident cartoonist, Graeme Bandeira, free education resources for KS2, and 3, family digital games and interviews with the ‘Olympic Picasso’, Roald Bradstock.

Sporting Heritage Founding Director, Dr. Justine Reilly said:

“We know there are so many sporting collections which link to the arts, but to date, there has been no specific focus on drawing this out as a specific collections area. Focussing on this subject for a full month will enable us to bring together, for the first time, the fields of sport, art, and heritage.

We all have a sporting story, and art can often play a key part! We’d love to invite as many people as possible to get involved with the free activities and share their own sport and art items and memories.”

The project will cover a broad range of visual art forms including portraits, murals, badges, street art, modern art, photography, animation, and each day will lead with a sports theme.

It is hoped the event will encourage discussion about when does sporting heritage become art itself including crests, badges, and fashion design, and highlight frequently ignored and hidden heritage.

Further details on the event can be found at https://www.sportingheritage.org.uk/content/category/events/sporting-heritage-art-month or by searching hashtag #SportAndArt across the Sporting Heritage social media channels.
