The funding must be used by the end of April 2021 Charities must be working within the Trust’s three key funding areas as follows: In addition to the above, priority will be given to registered charities that deliver frontline services and activities, rather than umbrella bodies, grant-giving bodies, conduit organisations or those where the main focus is on research. The funding is intended to support core costs of the charity in its usual work (though this may include revised ways of working due to coronavirus/COVID-19 and learnings during lockdown), ie, it should not be for expansionary work or new projects. This may include salary costs of core staff being brought back from furlough (not project-related posts). Deadline for applications is 5pm on 27 July 2020. The guidelines, frequently asked questions and online application form are available on the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust website. The Trust will only respond to queries about technical problems or difficulties when completing or submitting the online application. Contact admin@jhrtrust.com outlining the issue and including a contact number. The Trust will not respond to any other queries.  Details at

A one off grant fund of £1,000 to £250,000 for core funding for small and medium-sized charities who need financial help due to lost income in the current financial year as a result of COVID-19.

The one-off £10 million Charity Survival Fund has been set up by the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust in response to their ongoing concern about the economic impact of coronavirus/COVID-19 on the nation’s charities. The grant funding aims to help small and medium-sized UK registered charities struggling with a loss of income in the current financial year due to the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic.

Priority will be given to charities that deliver frontline services and activities in areas prioritised by the Trust: health and wellbeing, welfare and education, arts and culture. This is the first time the Julia and Hans Rausing Trust will be open to accepting applications from charities as it does not accept unsolicited applications in normal circumstances.

The level of funding depends on the charity’s annual income:

  • Grants of up to £5,000 – annual income up to £20,000
  • Grants of up to £10,000 – annual income £20,001 and £100,000
  • Grants of up to £50,000 – annual income £100,001 and £250,000
  • Grants of up to £100,000 – annual income £250,001 and £500,000
  • Grants of up to £250,000 – annual income £500,001 and £5 million.
  • Health and Wellbeing – This includes charities working within the areas of disease and patient care; mental health and addiction recovery; disability, aged and palliative care.
  • Welfare and Education – This includes charities addressing poverty and disadvantage, especially in relation to young people; and also those working in areas such as food insecurity and criminal justice reform and rehabilitation.
  • Arts and Culture – This includes charities working in the performing arts; independent (ie, not local authority controlled) museums and galleries; heritage sites and historic buildings.
